Post Alpha 1.0

IT'S FINISHED

We're coming up on a week now since alpha 1.0 released and I still feel just as exhausted as when I released it lol. I thought I'd take some time to do a good old devlog and talk about alpha 1.0 and all of its challenges, and also a bit about what I've learned.

For those only interested in the future of MOTORFISH, I doubt I'll be giving the game any updates for a while, and the project could even end here depending on where things go. In the meantime I'm gonna improve my skills in game jams and take it easy with game dev for a while.

The Reception

While it did have a rocky release with the boss being EXTREMELY overtuned, I'm happy with the reception MOTORFISH has had. Lots of people, especially on reddit, have left really kind comments about the game, and I've received a lot of compliments on the games art style. While some friends I've shown it to have been somewhat disappointed, others have had a really fun experience fighting against the new boss.

The Development

The biggest thing I think I've learned from Alpha 1.0 is that you should always overestimate how long an update will take. Always. My initial idea for the release date was December 3rd, and even then I thought I would have had time to spare, but I was still far from done when that day passed. On top of the inaccurate release date, I also had a terrible work ethic with MOTORFISH.

There were days where I spent the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed working on MOTORFISH, and no matter how passionate about a project you are, thinking about it 24/7 is not healthy. I'm still struggling to find a balance with not burning myself out, which before you ask did in fact happen with alpha 1.0. My new years resolution for this year is to improve my work ethic and to keep game development as a hobby and not something I NEED to do.

And for those who are interesting, some concept art/behind the scenes.

Some items such as Groovy Gun, Toaster Fish, Gunpowder Gills, and Resurrection.

Just what WAS he cooking??? Nothing good that's for sure.

The full version of Octo the Great's cloak.

That's all from me for now. Thank you guys again for playing and supporting MOTORFISH!
